Ready to read some more about Contra series? I hope you are since we’re just half way through. Konami was pretty serious about keeping this franchise alive and updated. By following year there has been 19 games in this sequel, with last being published September 24, 2019.
Collector’s Series: Castlevania & Contra – Nov 16, 2002
Compilation of classic NES titles made exclusively for PC gamers. “Castlevania and Contra: The Konami Collector’s Series” contains Contra (1987) and Super C (1988) as well as Castlevania’s first three sequels. Now, I really like the story on this one. You play as Simon Belmont who has an unusual task upon him. According to the game’s mythology, Dracula comes back to life every one-hundred years and Simon is supposed to kill him. Gameplay is pretty much the same, but I was really surprised by the mythology/fantasy storyline. Neo Contra – Oct 26, 2004
This time Konami comes up with 3D top-down shooter for Play Station 2. Pure arcade-style shoot-’em-up, side-scrolling action, just as we used to. Neo Contra plays out a little differently though, mostly from a top-down perspective. However, the game ultimately doesn’t provide much depth or challenge. Seems like Konami decided to ease down a little bit when it comes to level difficulty. As a big fan of the Contra series I found Neo Contra to be quiet entertaining. Despite game’s very short length, it offers some decent action, especially if you join forces in co-op mode. Contra 4 – Nov 13, 2007
After three years Konami decided to give us just what we expect from Contra. Colaboration with WayForward Technologies brought first Contra game made by US-based studio after C: The Contra Adventure from 1998. Contra 4 ignores most of the games in the Contra series and brings the gameplay to its roots. Classic action-packed side-scrolling shooter with no much storyline or cinematics. That’s exactly what we want from Contra franchise! Endless hours of shooting and bullet-rains all over the place. If you had Nintendo DS back in the days, oh-boy, you were lucky! In case you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our article about Contra 4 or proceed to safe download and try it yourself.
Contra ReBirth – Sep 07, 2009
Retro is Back! That’s the first thing that comes to my mind when I talk about this game. A throwback to the the 8 and 16 bit Contra games. It’s an action-shooter game developed by M2 for WiiWare. Bill is introduced again, and I’m sure we all know what comes after. He find himself wake up from some sort of cryogenic sleep in order to save the world. This time from Chief Salamander and his army. Along for the co-op ride is a mysterious character named Yaggyu. Unlike it’s predecessors, Contra Rebirth story unfolds in well-drawn cut scenes. Hard Corps: Uprising – Feb 16, 2011
Beautiful hand-drawn anime/manga art style really amazed me with this one. We’ve never seen something even similar to this when it comes to Contra series. It utilizes a modern 2.5-D art style which blends perfectly into the storyline and gameplay itself. It features two main game modes – Arcade and Rising. Now, let me discover you an Easter egg in this game. During the loading screen of the first stage, hit Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A. If you got it right, you’ll hear sweet remix from the original Contra game. If you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our Hard Corps: Uprising review or proceed to safe download and try it yourself.
Contra Evolution – Jun 27, 2013
Ready for another remake? This time Konami comes up with this beautiful HD remake of NES classic. First time Contra is released only for iPhone users. Contra Evolution is a faithful replica of the original NES Contra that features never-seen graphics, female characters and pay-to-play credits. To be honest, I felt a bit disappointed about this game. It’s not necessarily a bad game but it was hard to see another franchise fall victim to some of the money hungry tactics. That’s how most of “mobile remakes” end up but I didn’t expect it from Konami. Price tag is just $0.99 so it’s definitely worth paying. If you are curious you can read our in-depth article about Contra Evolution and get to know more.
Contra Return – Jun 06, 2017
To bring us another mobile side-scrolling shooter Konami partners with Tencent and comes up with Contra Hero Returns. Free-to-play game that brings the classic Contra feeling to mobile platforms. Now, this game made me question Konami’s intentions. Whenever a game has PvP mode and micro transactions, it goes in direction of pay to win. In this game, Diamonds are thing to look for. You can get them on daily basis by completing tasks and buy upgrades which will help you beat other players. You can buy them as well, and big advantage over non-paying players. If you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our article about Contra Return or proceed to safe download and try it yourself.
