Started in the late 80’s of the 20th century, Contra series has become one of the most famous game franchises ever. More than 15 sequels were published for various platforms, ranging from Nintendo and Xbox to PC and mobile. We’ll take a brief look at each of them starting with the legendary Contra 1987 by Konami.
Contra – Feb 20, 1987
Famous run-and-gun well known for its fast-paced old-school action. You play as a bad-ass soldier named Bill. You’re set to battle through swarms of enemies coming at you in waves. Most of games popularity comes from its two player co-op mode which was a rarity at the time. Now something that new-era gamers haven’t been used to. Believe it or not, just a single hit from any enemy will instantly kill you. You’ll also lose current weapon, if dying wasn’t bad enough. There are over 10 areas in the game but it will take a while to complete, considering the game difficulty. Super Contra – Jan 8, 1988
“He’s not human – He’s not alien – He’s the predator!” Words from the cover of Super Contra, also referred to as Super C. Along with that, there’s another tagline on the cover saying “Destiny Waits in The Jungle”. Cover did the marketing for itself pretty much. As this is the sequel to the Contra, main characters stay the same. Bill and Bean are sent on another campaign against the alien Red Falcon army. Though gameplay is similar to the original, Super C features some upgraded graphics and top down levels. Like the first game, it has a two player co-op mode. If you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our in-depth article or download Super Contra ROM and try it yourself.
Operation C – Feb 08, 1991
Very interesting fact about this game is that it has many differences depending on the region. To start with, it’s named Contra in Japan and Probotector in Europe. European version has seen replaced human character with RD008, the robot from the two NES Probotector games. On top of that, difficulty settings were different as well so Japanese gamers had easier time dealing with Operation C. It was featured in Konami’s Game Boy compilation cartridge. You can find compilation under the name Konami GB Collection Vol. 1. If you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our article about Operation C or proceed to safe download and try it yourself.
Contra III: The Alien Wars – Feb 28, 1992
Depending on your location, you might know Contra III: The Alien Wars as Contra Spirits or Super Probotector: Alien Rebels. That’s the name of the game in Japan and Europe. Super NES game developed and published by, you guessed it – Konami. It is the third console sequence of Contra, hence the title “Contra III”. By developers original plan, Contra Force was supposed to be released first, but with change of plans, it came afterwards. The year is 2636. and Bill and Lance are up to the task once more. If you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our article about Contra III or proceed to safe download and try it yourself.
Contra Force – Sep 30, 1992
In case you lost count, Contra Force is the third game in the Contra series. Interestingly, it has nearly no ties to the main franchise, and is often considered a spin-off. We came to surprise once we found out that this game haven’t been published in Japan. Even though it’s created and published by Konami. At the beginning phase this was not meant to be a Contra game. It started out as completely different game known as Arc Hound, made for Japanese market. We can see Konami has been prone to changing ideas and plans, but it all turned out good in the end. Contra: Hard Corps – Aug 08, 1994
The sixth game in the Contra series, Hard Corps brings us four unique playable characters. Each of them with their own weaponry and skills. Four weapon inventory and a branching story system with six unique game endings and 11 total stages. Please consider it was 1994. when this game was published, so multiple endings was a huge thing. Beside that, this was the first Contra game to be published for a Sega console. We must mention that games is so hard that Japanese version got update to ease the difficulty. If you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our article about Contra: Hard Corps or proceed to safe download and try it yourself.
Contra: Legacy of War – Nov 30, 1996
With rise of PlayStation Konami knew what has to be done. By the end of 1996. they came up with Contra: Legacy of War for PS 1. Later on it came out for Saturn in 1997. as well. Not to mention it wasn’t as nearly as popular as PS version. For the first time game was developed by Appaloosa and then published by Contra franchise owner. Another, so far not-seen innovation is 3D environment in which game is taking place. If you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our article about Contra: Legacy of War or proceed to safe download and try it yourself.
C: The Contra Adventure – Aug 31, 1998
Two years after the last game Konami published sequel to Contra: Legacy of War. Unfortunately, not so beloved by fans of the Contra series and reviewers. IGN gave it one star rating which is pretty rare. It does remind on the games we’ve used to see in this franchise, but this definitely isn’t Contra. I’ve been a fan of the series from the very beginning, when the first game came out. I can remember the excellent gameplay and unique game style that made it an all-time classic. Unfortunately Contra Adventure has neither. Despite this you should still give it a try and make your own opinion. We made this easy for you so you can just go and download C: The Contra Adventure ROM.
Contra: Shattered Soldier – Oct 22, 2002
It has been almost five years since we’ve seen Contra game. It was worth waiting though, since guess who’s back? One and only – Bill Rizer! Prepare to kick ass through a variety of intense levels with loads of action. As we know he is imprisoned for crimes against humanity after the alien wars. However, at the start of the game, Bill is released with the task of saving the world. As you can see on the cover, your co-op partner is going to be a girl this time. A bad-ass female cyborg named Lucia. If you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our article about Contra: Shattered Soldier or proceed to safe download and try it yourself.
Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX – Nov 3, 2002
Just two weeks after release of Shattered Soldier, we got Game Boy re-release of the SNES classic Contra III: The Alien Wars. It is an upgraded version of the game, and includes new levels based on the Hard Corps. Many improvements were made compared to the original game. One of my favorite changes is removal of top-down view stages. Levels from Contra: Hard Corps were added to replace ones we just mentioned. These stages are exceptionally hard, and they’ll test your patience and reflexes. If you are curious and want to find out more you can either read our article about Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX or proceed to safe download and try it yourself.
